Room rent limits cut more than the room rent

This is the deduction that surprises people most. Taking a better room does not just cost you the extra room rent. On some policies it cuts a slice of the whole bill.

What the limit is

Many policies say what kind of room you are covered for. It may be an amount per day, or a room type like sharing or single, or a percentage of the sum insured. Look in your policy paper for room rent limit or room category.

Stay inside it and none of this applies. Go above it and two things can happen: the room rent is capped, and on some policies a matching share is cut from the other charges too.

Why they cut the other charges

In Indian hospitals, a costlier room usually means costlier everything: doctor visit charge, nursing charge, some procedure charges. So if you were covered for one room rate and took a room at double that rate, the company may treat those other charges as doubled too.

In simple words: a better room can cost you a share of the surgery, nursing and doctor fees as well, not only the extra room rent. That is why this one line in the policy is often the biggest cut on a bill.

An example

These numbers are only an example, to show how the sum works. Your own policy decides the method and which charges are counted.

Amount
Room rent your policy allows, per day₹ 5,000
Room rent actually charged, per day₹ 10,000
So the covered share is50%
Other linked charges on the bill₹ 60,000
Of that, the company may pay₹ 30,000
Cut from the other charges₹ 30,000

The extra room rent there is ₹ 5,000 a day. The cut across the rest of the bill is ₹ 30,000. That gap is why this is worth checking before admission, not after discharge.

It does not apply to everyone

Many policies have no room rent limit at all, and some say clearly that this kind of cut will not be applied. Others cap only the room rent and leave the rest alone. So do not assume either way. Your own policy paper is the only answer.

What to do before an admission

  1. Find your room limit before you are admitted Read the policy paper, or ask the company in writing. Doing this while choosing the room is worth far more than after discharge.
  2. Ask the hospital for a room inside it Tell the admission desk your covered room type and rate. They do this daily and can tell you at once which rooms fit.
  3. If no allowed room is free, get that in writing Hospitals do run full. If you had to take a costlier room because nothing else was available, ask for a note saying so on the same day.
  4. Check the room type on the final bill Make sure the bill shows the room you actually stayed in. A typing mistake here can cause a cut you did not earn.
